The Buffalo Bills have been without star wide receiver Sammy Watkins for seven games after he was placed on injured reserve back in late September.
Seantrel Henderson, who hasn't played in almost a year after his battle with Crohn's disease last year, would have a chance to replace Mills.
The Buffalo Bills now have the bye week in the rear view mirror.
Other updates Ryan provided on injury include positive news on Marcell Dareus ("progressing nicely", according to Sal Maiorana), and not-so-positive news on Brandon Tate (still in the concussion protocol).
"The week off came at a good time", guard Richie Incognito said. "But Cliff Avril is a heck of a football player and we knew going in that that was going to be tough sledding no matter who he lined up against, but it's tough I think", Ryan said. "We'll see who steps up and earns that starting job", Buffalo (4-5) head coach Rex Ryan said.
"Seantrel looked outstanding (in practice) last week, so we're going to give him an opportunity and see what happens", said Ryan.
"I just met with Sammy, Sammy feels fantastic".
However, it takes more than a week to heal a broken leg, the injury starting center Eric Wood suffered last Monday against the Seattle Seahawks in a 31-25 loss on a one-yard touchdown run by Mike Gillislee in the fourth quarter. Signed in the offseason, White split first team reps at left cornerback with starter Ronald Darby. "But when that time occurs, and hopefully that time will occur soon, he'll be back out there". In that game Ryan Groy took his spot at center but Ryan said Groy and Patrick Lewis will compete for the starting spot for this week's game against the Bengals.
Acknowledgement, albeit passive-aggressively, that Jordan Mills has been the clear weakest link on the offensive line. Henderson has battled health problems related to Crohn's Disease, and was even suspended for four games for using cannabis to treat the symptoms of the autoimmune illness. "I'm encouraged right now the way he practiced, especially last week. That was the guy that I remember [before his illness], a special athlete, so hopefully he can continue that way". Shoot, we have to worry about getting five wins so I think that's where we have to look at.
Rex Ryan gave the team the entire week off following last Monday's hard-fought loss in Seattle, and while the Bills were enjoying the rest, not a lot went right for them around the AFC as Miami, Kansas City, Denver, Baltimore, and Tennessee - all teams ahead of the Bills in the conference standings - won their games.
