The City police detained writer and theatre activist Kamal C Chavara on charges of insulting the national anthem. He was taken into police custody on Sunday. "We checked it and charged a case against him", Karunagapally Sub Inspector Rajesh said. He was taken into custody from Kozhikode after a case was registered against him at the Karunagalapalli Police station few days ago on a complaint filed by a Yuva Morcha activist.
Kozhikode North Assistant commissioner of police, Prithviraj, said that the blogger has been charged under Section 124 (A) of IPC (sedition) and will be soon be handed over to Karunagapalli Police. "Karunagapali Police got a phone call over the facebook post of Kamal".
We registered the case on the basis of a tip-off by one of our sources. The cops gave his name as Kamal Chadran. The Facebook post carried passages from his novel reportedly published in 2015. Kamal, Chairman and Festival Director of the International Film Festival (Kerala), had earned the ire of these groups for his comments on disallowing police inside IFFK.
Kamal had earlier said that the police would not be allowed to enter IFFK venues to check if people were standing up for the national anthem and make arrests. It is also made mandatory to play the anthem before screening of movies at film festivals.
