USA 36/Rockville Road was originally closed, but at least one lane has been reopened in each direction to provide local access across the I-465 bridge.
Police told WISH-TV in Indianapolis a semi hauling a auto compactor struck the overpass, resulting in the massive damage.
Traffic on that part of the interstate came to a standstill, leaving some motorists stranded until they could be ushered off the road around lunchtime.

There is visible damage above and below the Rockville Road overpass.
That motorist, 28-year-old Christine Haraburds of Indianapolis, sustained injuries to her upper body. The semi's driver was not hurt, and there were no other reported injuries.
The incident occurred when a vehicle crusher being hauled by a truck activated and struck concrete beams as the load passed beneath the bridge. That resulted in five other vehicles being struck and damaged from the falling debris.
Eastbound and westbound Rockville Road is also closed. Shortly after 2 p.m., engineers had completed their assessment.

Four load-bearing girders are damaged, according to INDOT. After damaged portions are separated from the bridge using concrete saws, crews will work to reopen limited access across the north side of the bridge. Northbound I-465 will need to remain closed while the steel-reinforced concrete beams overhead are removed and all debris are cleaned so as not to present a danger to motorists.
Replacing the beams will require longer-term repairs similar to construction of a new bridge deck. Traffic must exit either east or west at I-70.
The I-465 closure is between 10th Street and I-70.
Southbound lanes of I-465 are open, as well as US 36/Rockville Road ramps entering and exiting I-465 southbound west of the bridge. Take 10th Street west to get on I-465 north, or turn north again onto Lynhurst Drive to take Crawfordsville Road northwest out of the city. The closure is expected to last several days.
Traffic that is displaced is expected to increase congestion on other routes, including I-465 on the east side and I-65 and I-70.
INDOT has signs posted to help route interstate traffic around the closure.
Riggs said the highway's northbound lanes are closed between I-465's Interstate 70 interchange and the 10th Street interchange. INDOT is monitoring traffic flow and make temporary improvements as appropriate, including traffic signal adjustments and additional signage.
