The Manatee County Sheriff's Office arrested 83-year-old Eugene Matthews for the shooting death of Rebecca Rawson, who had celebrated her 65th birthday just three days before.
Manatee County Sheriff's officials tell local news outlets Eugene Matthews opened the door about 7 p.m. Tuesday and started firing a handgun.
According the deputies, Rawson, her daughter and her brother-in-law went to Matthews' Pritchart Road home to retrieve their lost dog. One round went through the front windshield and struck Rebecca Rawson, an email from the agency said.
Officials say that Ms Rawson and her daughter waited in their auto as her brother-in-law knocked on Mr Matthew's door to ask if he had seen their dog. He picked it up and began walking back to the auto. The vehicle drifted into reverse and crashed. Rodney grabbed the gun from Williams and a struggle ensued and one round was sacked before Rawson could get the gun from the suspect. Matthews fired another round before Rodney could take the gun away.
Rawson was transported to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Matthews was charged with second-degree murder and two counts of attempted homicide.
