Tonight on NXT, after two classics at TakeOver: Brooklyn II and TakeOver: Toronto, NXT Tag Team Champions #DIY and The Revival square off in the main event to determine who goes on to defend the titles in San Antonio! This is a rematch from Osaka where Lorcan won in an upset.
We are on tape from Orlando, Fla. We are shown a video package of Billie Kay and Peyton Royce attacking NXT Women's Champion Asuka in the parking lot earlier.
Evans and Billie start. After they take out Asuka, Kay and Royce defeat Macy Evans and Sarah Bridges (more on her shortly). Nikki Cross arrived, making the save and chasing off Billie Kay and Peyton Royce. Royce tags in and stomps on Estrella. Dash gets floored as well and it's back to Ciampa who walks into a DDT for another two. Billie uses the opportunity to rake the eyes and Royce back in with the bulldog on Billie's knee. It appears that Asuka has not one, but three challengers coming for her Women's Championship. Bridges dropkicks Royce and Kay at the same time. That part of her character is going to be crucial if we're ever going to believe that anyone can beat her for the title.
After toying with Cruz for a good portion of the match, Elias Samson puts him away with a spinning neckbreaker. With Graves ripping on Samson for general annoyances, Elias drives Cruz into the corner but gets rolled up for one. A clothesline drops Samson and that's about it for Cruz's offense as he gets his ribs bent around the post. Samson destroyed him with a clothesline and then followed with clubbing blows in the corner. Cruz stretched on the ring post and bounced on the apron.
We open with a recap of DIY vs. Revival.
Lorcan with a snapmare to start as they feel each other out. Lorcan tossed Almas down, but Almas gave him a little tranquilo pose. Almas does some showing-off, which ends up backfiring when Lorcan hits a blockbuster outside of the ring. Backbreaker and inverted DDT from Almas set up the running slap in the corner and Almas works him down. Gargano finally gets the desperation tag and Ciampa runs wild. Lorcan escaped, teased a suplex but then lit up Almas with uppercuts and then an overhead suplex. Lorcan counters with an Alabama Slam into the corner and the referee calls for a break as Almas lays in the ropes.
Almas interviewed in the ring and he is asked about what to expect from him in 2017. Almas shuts the fans up when he speaks in Spanish and says Lorcan was first and Roderick Strong is second.
Backstage, Nikki Cross, along with EY and Wolfe, tells an interviewer she will take the NXT Women's Title. Gargano breaks out of an attempted leglock and suicide dives onto Dawson. Gargano gets tied in the Tree of Woe and they be clubberin on that knee. The revival's work is attractive in its simplicity; the double-teams, taking the ref, cutting off the ring and working at a well thought out, but never slows pace. The Revival (Dash & Dawson): The champions took control at the start, working over Gargano for a bit. Dawson pulls Wilder in and tags him. Back in, Gargano looked for the tag but was POUNCED as he dove for the tag and was again cut off.
Back from another break with the leg work continuing via a half crab. Gargano kicks up and lands the enzuigiri. Trio of German Suplexes on Dawson and Wilder sent out with a back bodydrop. Ciampa hits the big running knee for a nearfall. Wilder gets the tag and sunset flips in on Ciampa. Gargano with the roll-up kick. Johnny is sent outside and Revival is way too happy with a potential countout. It makes complete sense, as this is how Gargano was taken out in Brooklyn and has been a theme throughout the feud. We know that the Authors of Pain are waiting on the champions but the question is who will be defending against them.
In a sitdown interview, Shinsuke Nakamura says he's proud of being NXT Champion after a very hard series against Samoa Joe.
With both Wilder and Dawson leaning on each other for assistance, the champions exploded across the ring with their double-team finisher to successfully retain their titles.
