The Davis Police Department, Yolo County District Attorney and Federal Bureau of Investigation announced Tuesday that a woman has been charged for committing a hate crime at the Islamic Center of Davis.
Bail for Laura Kirk-Coehlo of Davis was set at $1 million.
Authorities say that soon after the crime was reported and the surveillance footage was released, Davis police received numerous tips regarding the vandalism.
The District Attorney's Office in a news release identified Lauren Kirk-Coehlo, 30, as the woman suspected of smashing six window panes and placing strips of bacon on door handles of the Davis Islamic Center on January 22.
She is charged in the vandalism of the Davis Islamic Center last month.
Hate crimes charges have been filed against Kirk-Coehlo, the Yolo County District Attorney said.
The vandalism occurred just before 4 am on January 22 at the Islamic Center of Davis, located on Russell Boulevard in Davis. The vandal broke six windows and two bicycles and put bacon strips on door handles.
Police are called the incident a hate crime incident as pork is a forbidden food for Muslims.
The case has now been turned over to the Yolo County District Attorney for prosecution.
