The company's lineup of dolls for 2017 should challenge other toymakers to improve their inclusivity as well.
The Rev. Keith Ogden of Hill Street Baptist Church sent a message to more than 100 of his supporters and parishioners Wednesday titled, "KILLING THE MINDS OF MALE BABIES".
"There are those in this world who want to alter God's creation of the male and female", he wrote. "We need to get back to our old values and morals".
He believes that churches need to speak out about gender identity, particularly when it affects young people. The Boy Scouts of America, last month, for example, announced that it will allow transgender children to enroll in scouting programs.
"It just doesn't make sense", Ogden insisted.
"Now you are going to have little boys playing with baby dolls and that's not cool". "In response to thousands of impassioned requests from fans for more options, American Girl is introducing a new series of contemporary characters and stories created to speak to even more girls' interests, backgrounds, and experiences", the company said in a statement.
Target nixed signs labeling toys for girls and boys in its stores; the Disney Store renamed girl and boy markers for its children's Halloween costumes, simply, "for kids;" and a gender-neutral version of the classic Easy-Bake oven now sells on retail shelves. "The 18" Logan doll has gray eyes that open and close, and short brown hair. "For boys, we know Logan can speak directly to them and give them something unique and special to call their own".
When American Girl unveiled its new collection on Tuesday featuring its very first boy doll, the news took the internet by storm.
