On May 6, American Red Cross volunteers will join the Watertown Fire Department and the City of Watertown in order to install free smoke alarms in homes throughout the city. Most people in a fire death do not die from the fire itself, they die from inhalation of smoke.
The National Fire Protection Association recommends smoke alarms be tested once a month and replaced every 10 years. The smoke detectors were provided free of charge by the Red Cross. "The Red Cross will install up to five detectors per house - on each floor and outside bedrooms".
In 2010, a grant of almost $1 million was given to MS for the goal of distributing smoke alarms to homes.
The Red Cross and Chief Herman note that they'll need the permission of homeowners, not just renters, to install the devices.
The cause for alarm event kicks off at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Ogden Amphitheater located at 343 25th Street in Ogden.
"A smoke alarm basically wakes you up".
These smoke detectors are unique because they have a 10 year battery life.
