With Kris Russell in the box for a hooking penalty on Timo Meier the Sharks took a couple trips into the zone with shades of the same old power play, i.e. lots of perimeter passing looking for ideal shots without much traffic in front of the net, until Logan Couture launched a wrister passed an off balance Cam Talbot resulting from some nifty cross ice passes to put the Sharks ahead 2-0. Connor McDavid wasn't even a blip on the radar screen tonight and recent hero Zack Kassian had a solo opportunity against Martin Jones but nothing more.
There is no such thing as momentum to be had outside the sealed unit that is each game in a National Hockey League playoff series. Cam Talbot recorded his second straight shutout with 23 saves. "The whole team's play went up a little bit when we did that".
Goals have been hard to come by for both the Oilers and the Sharks.
Draisaitl has one shot on goal. Laurent Brossoit replaced Talbot - and gave up a second goal to Pavelski, again on a power play, less than four minutes later.
Marleau started the onslaught with his first of the playoffs with a power-play strike at 2:02 after Edmonton defenseman Oscar Klefbom had a failed clear.
However, Oiler mistakes trumped skill and penalties trumped play making in game four of this first-round playoff series.
As bad as things were for the Oilers in the first period, the second was far worse. Really, the Oilers might find themselves galvanized by such a resounding defeat, especially with the series shifting to Edmonton for Game 5. I expect the Ducks to move to the 2nd round tonight. In the Sharks' Game 1 overtime win, the team took 44 shots. It was a one-off.
San Jose then took the game over in the second starting when Marleau scored on an early power play.
The Sharks' goal drought ended quickly.
The sequence was a result of Talbot freezing a Burns dump-in from center, and Oilers coach Todd McLellan elected to change lines before Pavelski won the offensive-zone draw against McDavid.
The San Jose Sharks finally have both of their top injured forwards back in the lineup, but their returns have done nothing to improve the team's offense. The previous fastest playoff goal for San Jose came 28 seconds into the game by Dany Heatley against Los Angeles in 2011.
"It was critical", Pete DeBoer said of scoring first. "It's an intimidating building to play in and it is even more when we have a lead early".
Welcome to the Gameday Blog, the one-stop shop for San Jose Sharks fans on every playoff gameday. They started shooting like Wyatt Earp at the OK Corral and pumped 13 shots on goal in the first 10 minutes of the first period.
Schlemko closed out the scoring at 6:45 of the third period. Tonight he helped generate several grade-A chances despite the fact that he only put two shots on goal in his 25 shifts.
The Sharks chances of advancing past the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs always depended on the health of Thornton and Logan Couture. The two bottom lines were Timo Meier-Tomas Hertl-Melker Karlsson and Marcus Sorensen-Chris Tierney-Joel Ward.
