Senior White House aide 'person of interest' in Russian Federation probe

A Washington Post report, citing anonymous sources familiar with the matter, said a senior Trump adviser is now considered a "person of interest" in the law enforcement investigation into whether Mr Trump's campaign associates coordinated with Russian Federation in an effort to sway the 2016 election.

US President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump board Air Force One for his first global trip as president. The person may be cooperating or have information of use to investigators.

The revelation undercuts President Donald Trump's insistence that his campaign had nothing to do with the Kremlin.

Included in Harris' tweet was a link to a New York Times article reporting that Trump had told Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Ambassador Sergey Kislyak during a meeting last week that firing FBI Director James Comey relieved him of "great pressure", presumably because of the bureau's probe into the Trump campaign's possible ties to Russia.

"I just fired the head of the F.B.I".

"I thought it was appropriate to seek a new leader", he said, expressing more direct support for the firing than he had in his more measured memo, which stopped short of endorsing a particular action but rather outlined what he called Comey's "serious mistakes" and noted that any possible decision to dismiss Comey "should not be taken lightly". During a commencement address Wednesday at the Coast Guard Academy, he complained bitterly about criticism he's faced.

It did not deny the Times report that Trump was critical of Comey to the Russians the day after he fired him.

Comey will testify in open session of the Senate Intelligence Committee at some point after the Memorial Day holiday, May 29, though a date has not yet been set.

Trump and his team planned the trip as an opportunity for the United States president to unify Muslim, Jewish and Christian leaders against extremism, a senior administration official said.

"I am hopeful that he will clarify for the American people recent events that have been broadly reported in the media", panel Chairman Richard Burr said in a statement.

The White House has disputed Comey's account of his February conversation with Trump concerning Flynn but has not offered specifics.

USA stocks immediately pared gains after the reports but still closed higher for a second straight day.

Other news reports have alleged Trump had previously asked Comey to stop the investigation into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.

The White House repeated its assertion that a "thorough investigation will confirm that there was no collusion between the campaign and any foreign entity".

Rep. Jackie Speier of California, a Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, said Friday that Rosenstein had made it clear that Mueller would have "carte blanche authority", but he also reassured lawmakers that he understood the role of Congress.

The Times report added to the impression given by Trump himself in a television interview last week in which he said the Russian Federation issue was a factor in firing Comey.

Mr Kushner has long advised the President both during his campaign and in the White House.

He continues, "Comey regards his predecessor as a mentor, while Mueller considers Comey his protégé". Many Democrats believe that his announcement that he was re-opening the probe 11 days before the November 8 election cost Clinton the presidency.

"This is an inflection point in the entire Russian Federation collusion investigation", he told MSNBC.

Trump on Thursday lashed out at the appointment of a special counsel to investigate allegations that his campaign collaborated with Russian Federation to sway the 2016 election, tweeting that it was "the single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history!" "I look forward to this matter concluding quickly". "That's taken off, '" Democratic Senator Patrick Leahy said on Twitter.

Republican Representative Scott Taylor told CNN there was "no question" that Trump had "some stumbles this week".

"I don't expect this to be any different", he added.

The memo is said to have been written by Mr Comey the day after Mr Flynn resigned. Trump was leaving for his first foreign trip, visiting Saudi Arabia, Israel, Vatican, and a pair of summits in Brussels and Sicily.

Lingering questions over his views on the Iran nuclear deal, commitment to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation security and skepticism of the Paris climate agreement, however, could generate tension at meetings with European counterparts in Brussels and Sicily.
