National Hockey League concussion protocol leaves loophole for Crosby injury

The Penguins also used both goalies - Marc-Andre Fleury and Matt Murray - as the Senators, who led the game 4-2 in the second, got goals from Dion Phaneuf, Kyle Turris, Mark Stone, Erik Karlsson and Mike Hoffman. In the Washington net, Braden Holtby was off of his game as the Penguins were opportunistic and capitalized on the chances the Capitals presented them.

Andre Burakovsky scored twice as the Washington Capitals thrashed the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-2 to level their Eastern Conference semi-final series on Monday.

The Caps have thrived on adversity throughout the 2017 Stanley Cup playoffs, and they've played some of their best hockey of the postseason in these last two games while their backs were to the wall and they were staring down the prospect of elimination. Washington heads into a deciding seventh game for the 10th time in 15 playoff series since the Alex Ovechkin/Nicklas Backstrom began with the 2008 Stanley Cup playoffs.

After a year off from the rigors of a decisive Game 7, the Capitals are ready to strap themselves into the one-game, winner-take-all rollercoaster once again. Those spotters are in the arena and in a central office in NY watching the video feed.

"I was just talking about it last night: Is this not the best rivalry in the game right now?"

"It gives us a little bit more confidence", Oshie said. The first three rallied Washington from a 2-1 deficit to keep its season alive.

He did not come out of Game 6 on Monday night.

Jake Guentzel picked up his playoff-leading ninth goal and Evgeni Malkin added another late in the third period to make the score look cosmetically better, but the Penguins were never in it.

Following Game 6, Penguins coach Mike Sullivan was asked if his captain went through protocol, and he replied, "No".

Through six games, the Capitals have out-shot Pittsburgh 200-134.

Come Tuesday morning, Crosby would be on the ice for practice, so it's safe to assume that he did not fail any type of concussion-testing that may or may not have happened, but given the murky waters of this situation thus far and how confusing the process has been, how can we even guess what's actually going on here? Though "HBK" was hardly the only group that had issues. Anyone who watched Crosby go headfirst into the boards late in the first period of Game 6 against the Washington Capitals had a hard time understanding how the concussion spotters, both at the PPG Paints Arena and in the player safety room in NY, could not have immediately ordered him off the Penguins' bench and off the ice for further observation.

Crosby was slow to get up and Hornqvist had to retreat quickly to the bench, but both remained in the game. He didn't miss a shift and stressed he felt fine. "I think Washington for sure is due to win". Play well. Do everything right.

#2 - The Penguins have a long history of tormenting the Capitals. Now they're doing neither. "The last two games they have dominated. We've got a chance to beat them in seven".

For a Game 7 of this magnitude, there's no telling what product each team will put on the ice. They lost a 3-1 lead to the New York Rangers in the second round of 2014, scoring just three goals over the final three games, a meltdown that cost coach Dan Bylsma and Ray Shero their jobs.

If they are going to play beyond Wednesday night and advance to the Eastern Conference Final for the second year in a row and continue their defense of the Stanley Cup, they are nearly certainly going to need him to do it one more time.
